The USDA has National standards for any food thatÂ’s to be labeled as 'certified organic'. These standards include the need for the agricultural entity to:

  • replace / restore what they use
  • make sure all products are free from chemicals, synthetics, and bio-engineering
  • raise animals without antibiotics and hormones
  • use a food handler that also follows established organic practices, and who is certified by the USDA to do so

A product that receives a '100% Organic' label from the USDA must contain only organically produced components. A product that receives a USDA 'Organic' label must have 95% organically grown ingredients.

No matter what, when you buy organic food you're giving your body something healthier than the alternatives (e.g. genetically engineered food).

In turn, this healthier food supports your immune system and improves overall energy levels.

While the cost of organic food is sometimes higher than the alternative, there is a financial value in those benefits (fewer trips to the doctor and better overall health)!

Eating Organic Food: Impact on Budget

People sometimes wonder why something without chemicals etc. would cost more (and it most often does).

Realistically, the price difference in organic food comes from the labor-intensive nature of the industry.

It takes more hours to deter insects, molds, etc. using companion planting, natural fertilizers, and organic insecticides than it does to use chemicals.

Additionally many organic farms receive far less support from the government. However, as people buy more organic food prices may lower somewhat because there will be more competition, and more investment in learning how to produce food organically.
