Buy Organics: Where and How?

Growing Organically

Healthy Food for Kids

How Does the Food Pyramid for Kids fit with Organic Food?

Healthy food for kids: organic food advantages include better tasting food that is chemical-free. The food pyramid for kids includes a balance of fruit, vegetables, meats and beans, dairy and grains.

For babies, toddlers, and children, organic food advantages are significant.

The benefits include no genetic modification of food, no chemical additives in the food or in the production (including growing) of food; better farming and/or gardening techniques, such as composting; crop rotation; use of organic soil; encouraging natural habitats for insects such as bees, ladybugs, spiders and worms; the fun of growing your own organic vegetables and fruits; and the joy of eating healthy and tasty food.

Food Pyramid for Kids

Many countries produce a food pyramid for children's diets. For children aged 6 to 11, it includes:

  • 6 ounces of grains (for example, whole grain breads, whole grain rice)
  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups of fruit: juice is not a replacement for whole fruits
  • 2 1/2 cups of vegetables: make sure your children have a good variety of green, red, yellow and orange vegetables
  • 2 to 3 cups of milk daily, plus cheese and/or yoghurt
  • 5 ounces daily of meats, fish or beans, such as turkey, chicken, tuna, salmon,(beef and pork are best limited to once or twice a week) and/or nuts, seeds and beans as a protein alternative

Organic Food Advantages

For babies and toddlers, eating organic foods rather than foods with chemicals, preservatives and fillers, helps to minimize the risk of childhood allergies. Speak to your doctor to find out what the best diet recommendations are for your baby or toddler.

Providing healthy food for children includes understanding the effect that food production has on our eco-system. Due to the growing global population, our environment is under more stress than ever before.

Industrialization and the rapid acceleration of technology has resulted in environmental issues that are growing more and more difficult to resolve.

We need to eat to live. But we can minimize the negative impact that intensive farming, genetic modification, the addition of chemicals to pesticides and fertilizers have on our land, water and air.

By growing our own organic vegetables and fruits and by looking for local farmers markets or grocery stores where we can buy organic foods, we can make a difference in the sustainability of our planet. Our children will thank us for that in future years.

Natural Soil Aeration

Soil with a good population of worms in it is a healthy soil. If your existing soil has plenty of worms then you just need to keep them happy while your vegetables grow.

Worms in your soil keep it aerated and maintain a functioning drainage system. Worms are, in effect, tilling your soil.

Worms do not destroy the soil structure or pollute the environment with petrol fumes and residues (as heavy machinery do).

By creating space with their burrowing, worms allow air to circulate, water to drain, and roots to grow.
