What to Buy Organic?

This site has focused primarily on freshly grown fruit, vegetables and herbs. Additionally, organic beverages like wine, coffees and juices are also discussed.

Organic meat farming (beef, pork, chicken, turkeys and other meats) are also discussed and are readily accessible through local organic food markets, or even through online organic food stores (you place your order online and they deliver to your door). We also discuss Organic Baby Food and Organic Pet Foods in a very specific manner, because there is such a significant interest in those two organic food categories.

Although the yearly spend on organic food in the world has risen to an estimated $60 billion (USD), many people still are not buying organic food. Why? The two most common reasons:

  • Some people believe anti-organic campaigners, who deny the benefits of organic food.
  • Some people believe that organic food is more expensive then conventional, intensively farmed non-organic produce.

Yet, while everyone is not yet convinced that organic food is best for us, the global market size has grown substantially over the past decade as many of us have understood and accepted that organic food is better for us and for our environment.

The research that has been carried out by many universities and organizations concludes that organically produced food is healthier and safer. So why do anti-organic campaigners produce research that finds negatively for the benefits of organic produce?

It is in the interests of those who are involved in the whole process of conventional production, and earn a living from it, to deny the organic foods benefits. This is understandable.

However, the health and safety of the human race, animals, and the whole environment is being disregarded in the chemical production of food. Find out more on the benefits of organic food and a look at health and safety issues in terms of organic and non-organic food production.

The taste of food is also sacrificed to quick and inexpensive production. Constantly eating bland tasting foods (and it is bland compared to the taste of fresh, organic produce) may be the reason so many people eat junk food. Junk food is full of sugar, fats and/or salt, which can be tastier than other conventionally produced foods.

People continue to consume non-organic food that is produced by a system that focuses on being quick and cheap, rather than being focused health, taste and quality.

The cost of producing organic food is higher. Therefore organic food prices are also higher. However on a value basis, you are getting more nutrition (and less chemicals) on a per dollar basis.

Sidebar: Our family grows a number of fresh vegetables: potatoes, green and yellow beans, peas, corn, lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, brocoli, squash, zucchini, even pumpkin! It's wonderful to have fresh produce during the summer and early fall.

And since we typically grow more than we can eat, we share and/or exchange with friends and family (my sister and I try to grow different vegetables so that we can each share with the other). Some vegetables are easier to preserve than others (we freeze our green and yellow beans and our peas (after blanching) and dry our fresh herbs).

Why do we have supplement our diets with multiple vitamin and mineral pills? Because in growing industrial crops and meats, we are taking the nutrition out, and putting chemical additives, antibiotics, etc. back in.

The most cost effective way of introducing organic food into your diet is to grow your own: organic vegetable gardening is rewarding, and not difficult.

If you can't grow your own organic produce, then visit local organic food markets and farmers markets. Buy organic food that is fresh and grown near-by.

Or place an order with your online organic food store, and have your organic groceries delivered to your home on a weekly basis.

The Cost of Buying Organic Foods

strawberry factsThe current perception is that to buy organic food is expensive. For example, organic strawberries are usually a higher price than commercially produced ones. But you need to consider some alternatives, strawberry facts demonstrate that they are easy to grow yourself (and everbearing strawberries produce all summer long) and that the value of eating healthier food is more than the cost of an organic lifestyle.

With access to online organic food stores, you can send organic gift baskets or packages (selecting your items from the online store) for a wonderful present for special occasions such as birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays.

You might have started to switch to organic foods, but be concerned about the impact on your food budget. Or perhaps you aren't convinced that the organics food cost is worth the health and environmental benefit. Buying Organic Food - you can afford it - will provide you with value and nutrition. You may find the breakdown of how much we pay for conventional produce, food for thought!

We can only spend what we have. For many of us our income only matches our outgoings, and so called 'luxuries' are not an option. But buying organic food is a matter of understanding where to find your suppliers, the seasonality of foods, how to benefit from buying in bulk, and more. Yes, it does take a bit more time and planning to buy organic food, but it does not necessarily take a bigger budget.

And if you considered the health and safety issues involved, you might consider buying organic food a necessity rather than a luxury.

Find more information on how to find ways of buying organic food affordably. You may find yourself surprised at how inexpensive some organic products, like milk for example, can be. There are also ways of using different types of supply, like farmer markets and box schemes, which can help your organic food budget.

Everyone can enjoy the benefits of organic food if they know how to make it affordable. To better understand why organic foods are so important for you and your family, and why you need to make organic foods part of your daily diet, read Why Buy Organic Food?
