What is Acai Berry?

Understanding Acai side effects as compared to Acai health benefits is important. What is Acai berry? Do Acai berry reviews provide more health information? Is Acai berry drink healthy and nutritious?


You cannot surf the internet or watch TV without hearing something about the Acai berry drink and Goji berry drink as the latest and greatest superfoods. Where is all this attention coming from? And is there any truth to it all?




What is Acai Berry?

The berry buzz really began with the discovery that antioxidants could be powerful cancer fighting tools that improve a person’s immunity to various diseases and aging-related symptoms.

That bit of information quickly turned the spotlight on all food and beverages that have antioxidant qualities including - yep - Goji and Acai berries. It should be noted that many fruits have these qualities but Goji and Acai sound exotic and appear to have high, relatively speaking, concentrations - giving them more marketability!

Just like any fruit, Goji and Acai also offer various vitamins and minerals, but the jury is still out on whether they can be considered a panacea. Let’s do some comparisons.




Acai Health Benefits vs. Goji Benefits

Advocates of Goji berries tell us that they contain 18 amino acids, 21 trace minerals, Vitamin B, C and Vitamin E.

In Tibet, where the berries grow natively, they are a predominant part of folk medicine especially as a blood cleanser. They are also recommended for people with allergies and sleep disorders.

Modern chemical analysis of Goji berries have discovered that they have various complex compounds including those that improve memory retention, fight liver disease, safeguard against fungus & bacteria, improve sexual function, and moderate blood pressure.

This all sounds good but you need to recognize that there have been very few clinical studies done. So at this time there is no conclusive proof that these benefits actually manifest when a person consumes Goji berries as a regular part of their diet.

Similarly Acai comes from Central and South America where the berries were used by healers for various ailments, particularly gastrointestinal complaints, fevers, and hair loss. Like Goji berries it has Vitamin C and E, along with amino acids, dietary fiber, antioxidants and fatty acids.

Proponents of Acai berry juice feel that it improves energy, helps with weight loss programs, lowers cholesterol, boosts sexual performance, supports the immune system and improves the body’s resistance to cancer.

Acai suffers alongside Goji berries from the lack of substantive testing. Additionally some manufacturers of Acai products are using very small amounts of Acai, meaning the benefits may be negligible.



Acai Side Effects Compared to Goji Side Effects

Acai side effects seem to be very minimal (if any whatsoever). The main concern with eating the fruit (or fruit by-products) comes when people are not dieting in a healthy manner. Since Acai has appetite suppressant qualities, that can lead to mal-nourishment. Beyond that Acai seems to be a safe food - no known Acai side effects at this time.

Goji side effects occur when it's mixed with blood thinners or certain prescription medications (for diabetes, heart conditions, etc.). For individuals with sleep disorders, Goji is counter-indicated since it can heighten alertness.




Consumer Feedback: Acai Berry Drink

In reading over consumer reviews for both Goji and Acai berries, Acai comes out ahead in popularity, particularly the Acai berry drink.

Most people who tried the supplement in some form seemed happy with the results it provided. Having said that people like Goji too - they're just not buying anywhere near as much of it.

We recommend that you discuss the Acai berry supplement with your medical doctor and make sure that you get a medical opinion on its benefits and on the potential Acai side effects.




What Experts Recommend: Acai Berry Reviews

If you're planning to try either Goji berries or Acai berries, the experts say to go organic. Look for the USDA label (or the organic certification label from your region or country) that tells you the product you’re getting meets the organic standard.

Additionally since there are so many companies dedicated to selling Goji and Acai product, take the time to research which company/source you’re buying from. You can find company (and Goji and Acai berry) reviews readily on the internet. Read over several before you buy. You want to make sure you buy a high concentrate of the berry versus a version that is watered down, sweetened, and/or filled with other additives.

The general consensus is that both berries are healthy for you in that they have essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidant qualities. However, that alone does not equate to either berry being a 'superfood'. Any product making claims that sound too-good-to-be true; well, it's probably not true or an exaggeration.

Being an informed consumer is still your best protection against scams and false claims and Acai side effects. Ensure that you research Acai berry information to clearly understand the benefits (and whether those benefits are under or over-stated).
