When a product gets attention from Oprah, the Today Show and even the New York Times, people tend to take notice. That’s certainly true with organic Acai berry drink. Along with people who swear by Goji berries, the Acai berry has been crowned a superfood. The question remains - is it really that great?

There are a lot of products on the market making claims that they will help you live longer, fight cancer, give you more energy etc. Acai sellers seem to have the same laundry list of benefits, so let's take a closer look.


Acai Berry Information: By the Numbers

Acai represents over 100 million dollars in consumer spending annually. By comparison Goji fruit sells just over 9 million dollars worth of product annually.


Organic Acai:

Ok, forego the hype that organic Acai berry will cure nearly everything under the sun that ails you. A more reasonable product claim is simply that Acai berry drink or juice is a healthy beverage.

Unfortunately since it grows in the rainforest you can't enjoy Acai berry fresh. Instead the majority of products on the market have been freeze dried and mixed with other ingredients. This is where the 'buyer beware' sign goes up. Read those ingredient lists - not all the Acai products are vitamin and nutrient packed.


Acai vs. Grapes:

Acai berries look a bit like a tiny purple grape. The seed from Acai is NOT edible. The fruit, however, contains amino acids, omega fats, protein and antioxidants. Studies indicate that the berries offer ten times the antioxidant power red grapes.

Acai Berry vs Goji Fruit:

Unlike Goji fruit, which is tart, Acai is sweeter making it more pleasant to consume. Some distributors have started freezing the pulp as juice bars, but they’re still pretty pricy. That leaves the Acai powder supplements or juice as the main options for consumers.

Acai Berry Information: Vitamins & Minerals

Acai berries have a variety of vitamins and minerals in them. These include Vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, C, and E. For minerals you’re looking at zinc, calcium, potassium and magnesium.


What Experts & Proponents are Saying About Acai Berry:

Some Acai berry companies provide a very high quality product while others are packed with empty calories. That means that you should thoroughly research the product you’re considering and read other consumer reviews.

With so many people looking to lose weight, look younger and have more energy, it's not surprising 'fad' companies would jump on the bandwagon. You want a product you can trust.

To find that product, avoid the free trials. Most of these give-aways have only minute amounts of Acai berry in them. As you read product labels there should only be Acai skin and pulp (no seeds). Additionally:

  • buy only those products that have been certified as organic from the USDA (or from your region or jurisdiction)
  • avoid Acai berry products with sugar in them
  • the unfiltered juice is better than filtered brands for the greatest amount of benefit from the fruit
  • look for juice sold in glass bottles (plastic can be very unhealthy)
  • buy only pasteurized juice (unpasteurized is NOT safe for consumption)
  • avoid any product that includes Acai root in the mixture (the effectiveness of the roots has not been studied)

Finally check with the BBB (Better Business Bureau), or the equivalent consumer agency in your region or country, and see if the company from whom you’re considering buying has any reports listed (and whether those complaints have been settled).


Organic Acai as a Supplement:

In reading through some of the 12,000,000 (yes, really!) websites that include Acai berry information, people who try it seem to be generally pleased with the results they’re getting. Acai helps suppress cravings and acts as an appetite suppressant. It is also a healthy diet supplement that’s packed with a lot of good properties.

There do not appear to be reports of organic Acai having any adverse side effects. Where Goji fruit seems counter-indicated for individuals taking blood thinners and for diabetics, Acai has shown no such issues. People with existing medical conditions or those who are taking prescription medication are advised to check with their physician before using Acai as a dietary supplement.
